In this video, I guide you through the installation of an EPDM rubber roof on a DIY garden room. As a first-timer, I found the process straightforward and believe anyone can achieve similar results. The key steps include:
- Preparing the Roof: I rolled out the rubber onto the OSB (oriented strand board) and let it settle in the sun to remove any creases. Sanding the roof with an orbital sander ensured a smooth surface, free of burrs and splinters.
- Applying Adhesive: Using a special roof adhesive, I applied it in sections with a paint roller. Rolling the rubber back in sections allowed for a manageable and precise application. I emphasized the importance of working in smaller sections to prevent the adhesive from drying too quickly.
- Attaching the Rubber: I carefully rolled the rubber onto the adhesive, brushing out any air bubbles as I went. Safety was a priority, especially near the edges of the roof.
- Trimming and Sealing: After adhering the rubber, I trimmed the edges, leaving a small overhang. I then installed the gutter trim, which sandwiches the rubber and ensures a watertight seal. The process involved nailing pre-drilled holes to secure the trim.
- Installing Curb Trims: The curb trims were added to the sides, pulling the rubber tight over the edges and securing it with nails. This ensures water is directed off the roof into the gutter.
- Finishing Touches: I completed the installation by adding corner covers and joint covers, which clip into place, enhancing the roof’s appearance and ensuring durability.
The final result is a professional-looking, watertight EPDM rubber roof that complements the fascia and soffit with its anthracite grey finish. This project demonstrates that with the right approach, even a novice can achieve excellent results.
